About

About this blog
This blog is about music. Film score music in particular composed for large format films, commonly called IMAX. There is some confusion about the format and all the different names used, such as Omnimax or IMAX 3-D. To get more information on the format itself please see the Wikipedia entry.

IMAX is a trademark of the IMAX Corporation and since most large format films are produced by other companies than the IMAX Corporation, there is no real centralized information source available on the music for these kind of films.

For this blog, I have tried to gather as much information as possible on music and soundtracks specifically composed for large format films and theme park rides. Most of these films are short documentaries on nature, science, space or specific locations with a length of approx. 60 minutes. Most of these films are shown in science centers or theme parks. The IMAX technology is not only used for documentaries and feature films, but also for many theme park rides around the world. There’s actually a theme park dedicated to large format films and adventure rides, which is really worth a visit:  The Futuroscope in Poitiers, France.

In recent years movie companies have started to show some of their major blockbusters (e.g. “The Dark Knight”, “Superman Returns”, “Avatar”)  in IMAX theaters with some scenes or the entire movie in IMAX or IMAX 3-D. Music and soundtracks for these films is not featured here, because these scores were not initailly composed for the large format, but for general exhibition in standard movie theaters.

About me
I’m a film music enthusiast and I’ve been interested in the art of film music for over 20 years. I’m also collecting soundtracks on CD. Before the internet, it was very difficult to find information about film music and soundtracks in general. In the late 1990s I already published this information on my original IMAX soundtracks website. Over time I will add information from the old site as well as new information.
